Tamatea Intermediate - Just Jack visit

Last Friday (20th May) I was invited to visit Tamatea Intermediate to talk to Room 6 about Just Jack. Their teacher  had read it to them and I enjoyed my visit immensely.
Yesterday - (Friday 27 May) I was back at Tamatea Intermediate, but this time to visit the librarian (Tracey Hall - a buddy from way back!) to do with my position at Beattie & Forbes Booksellers.

Thanks to the students for making me feel just as welcome as on my Author visit. It was great to say hi again and I especially wanted to thank Room 6 for the fabulous letters your teacher, Mrs Howie passed onto me from you all.
You guys are Awesome!

Kid's Lit Quiz Napier

Friday 20th May 2011
WOW! There were 24 teams at the Hawkes Bay section of the Kid's Lit Competition - and they sure knew their stuff. For those who haven't heard of the Kid's Lit Competition, or aren't sure what it is about - well.... it's a fantastic opportunity for book readers from year 6 to year 8 - right across the world - to be part of a National, (then if they're lucky and know their stuff) - an International competition.

The drive and 'Ringmaster' behind this fabulous competition is Wayne Mills who received a NZ Order of Merit for his dedication to this wonderful event.
Kids who excel at sport are recognised for their effort and the Kids Lit Quiz is is a way that readers can be rewarded and recognised for their book knowledge.

The competition is made up of categories, each with their own set of questions. These questions are different every time and span right across classics, characters, cannibals or creatures and just about anything else you can think of to do with books. I have been a marker at the Hawkes Bay Competition for around 5 years and love it every time. It's fun, rollicks along at a roaring pace, the kids win books, cash for themselves and even the parents and adults who come along to support their kids have chances at adult books up for grabs.

The only thing I can't figure out is why Wayne Mills and this amazing competition isn't supported financially by either a major sponsor or given an annual grant by the government?

CONGRATULATIONS TO TARADALE INTERMEDIATE - WINNERS ON THE NIGHT!
