Edit-Garden-Books - Bliss!

Friday 16 September
Today is my last day off. I've spent the last week at home, editing a manuscript that has been calling me from my desk for months. Some of my writing friends hate editing - but I really enjoy making something better, sentence by sentence - until it's as good as I can get it. Then sending it away 'on holiday' for my writing friends to read, who tell me if they like it or it really sucks (good friends can tell you that.)

As spring has sprung, my garden wasn't just calling - it was positively shouting at me - and so it's a lot happier after some attention. It'll pay me back with strawberries, blackberries, roses and vegies in a couple of months.I've also taken some time to read some of the classic children's stories I've been collecting from jumble sales and the giant book sales we have in Napier during the year.

'Wind in the Willows'  (written in 1908!) was a charmer, and I wondered whether the author had fashioned the characters of Rat, Mole, Badger and especially Toad - around people that he knew.

'The Iron Man' is a story from 1968 - A story I first experienced as the animated movie of 'The Iron Giant'. It is very different from the book but fabulous in its own right. I tried to hire it out today but alas, it isn't available. If you ever get the chance to watch it - grab it! It's wonderful.

And the last classic I've read this week is Jacqueline Wilson's - 'The Illustrated Mum' from 1999. This hasn't been around as long as Toad and his friends, but I'm sure will still be popular in years to come. It's a great story about two sisters dealing with a troubled Mum. She loves her tattoos, is very imaginative, impulsive and fun, but not always.... I couldn't stop reading.

Hagrid, Mrs Dursley, Ginny Weasley and A Dementor!

WOW! Lots of Tween Bookclub members came along to the Harry Potter Quiz night. We had 30 questions for the participants including 'sudden death' questions for members who had matched their scores.
Well done to everyone who came along dressed up - especially Stella (aka Hagrid), Ruby (aka Dudley's Mum) Corey (my assistant - Harry Potter himself!) and all the Hogwarts students.

Special Congratulations to the winners of our quiz - Rachel and Jennifer. I hope you can find space on your walls at home for your huge posters!
